Continuing the Theme in 2013

Hello everyone, and welcome to another year of TEDxChapmanU! In continuing our theme of Icons, Geniuses & Mavericks, which celebrates those who are celebrated by others, those who aren’t afraid to dream those lofty goals and those who challenge the status quo every day, we present a TED Talk that will inspire you to be a game-changer in 2013. Especially applicable to our film schools, at the inception of a new semester here on Chapman’s campus, this talk features producer Julie Burstein discussing the creative process.

Burstein delves into the stories of other creative thinkers, like filmmaker Mira Nair, writer Richard Ford, sculptor Richard Serra, and photographer Joel Meyerowitz, to show the possible hardship of a life based on creativity, but also the reward of creating in the face of challenge, or adversity. It’s the perfect motivation to get out there and follow your dreams, or embrace doing what you love if you’re lucky enough to have already found it.

Genius, Musician

Rock musicians have a reputation for being super icons with a genius for music and performing, but behind all the big hair, loud guitars and crazy fandom there are intelligent individuals who would give your philosophy and science professors a run for their money. Here are a few brainiacs that not only show musical genius, but have proven their worth through the academic world.

Brian May (Queen): Prior to becoming a key part of Queen, May studied astrohpysics at Imperial College, London. In 1971, before adventuring into the world of rock’n'roll, May began work on his thesis about the formation of zodiacal dust clouds. Simple, right? 36 legendary years later, May would finally hand in that thesis entitled, “Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud.” He would graduate with his Ph.D. in astrophysics a year later and has since accepted a post as Visting Researcher at Imperial College.

Memorial Hall Straightened

When looking at our speaker opportunities for this inaugural TEDxChapmanU, we found them to fill one or more of these three descriptions. Looking back at TED 2007, this was their theme, too. It is still one of the most talked about TED conferences in history, so we felt a strong pull to launch Chapman’s first TEDx event with the same strength and thought-provoking theme.

So what do these three labels mean, exactly? We’ll break it down for you below:

  • Icon: a person so well known for their beliefs, their work, their leadership in certain industries and categories that their name can almost replace the subject.
  • Genius: a person embodying exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of unprecedented insight.
  • Maverick: a person who is willfully independent all the time, under all circumstances. They take risks that conformists shirk at, and push harder seeking challenges that others feel are ‘insane’.
